The McLaren MP4-16 was the Formula 1 - racing cars from McLaren for the Formula 1 2001 season . It was powered by a Mercedes engine. Bridgestone provided the tires .
Painting and sponsorship
The primer of the MP4-16 was black on the side pods and silver on the engine cover, as well as the front and rear wings. There were also red accents on the front wing and on the side pods. This paintwork was largely the result of the main sponsor, the cigarette manufacturer West . Other sponsors were Siemens , SAP and Mobil .
At races in countries where cigarette advertising was banned, the word West was replaced by the driver's first name.
driver
The MP4-16 was driven by two-time world champion Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard . This was the sixth time in a row that they were the driver duo for McLaren.
2001 season
After Ferrari won both titles in the 2000 season , the MP4-16 should bring them to the top. However, the great success did not materialize due to the superiority of the Ferrari and numerous technical problems with the MP4-16, so that McLaren had to be content with second place at the end of the season.
David Coulthard remained Michael Schumacher's closest pursuer over the season. After the fourth round of the season in San Marino, both drivers were still tied in the championship. After that Michael Schumacher finished on the podium seven times in a row (four wins, three second places), while Coulthard was only twice on the podium (one win, one third). Coulthard could not make up for the resulting lead and was runner-up with 65 points.
The two-time world champion Mika Häkkinen (1998, 1999) struggled with technical problems during the season. Up until the seventh race of the season, he had only managed to score three championship points. In total, Häkkinen was on the podium only three times (two wins in Great Britain and the USA , a third place in Canada ). He finished the season with 37 World Championship points in fifth place overall and ended his Formula 1 career.
