- Bamiyan / Afghanistan : The Taliban begin in the Bamiyan Valley with the destruction of the world's largest free-standing Buddha statues .

- Bern / Switzerland : In a referendum, 76.8% of the voters vote against the popular initiative “Yes to Europe” and thus against the start of negotiations on Switzerland's accession to the European Union . The turnout is 55.8%. Two further initiatives for lower prices for drugs and for more Tempo 30 zones are rejected as it were.

- Djibouti City / Djibouti : Dileita Mohamed Dileita becomes Prime Minister.
- Washington, DC / United States : The Association of the music industry in America and the National Endowment for the Arts are finding that the song Over the Rainbow the performer Judy Garland was the best song of the 20th century, is in second place White Christmas by Bing Crosby . The survey of teachers and scholars was intended to identify songs that were and are significant to an understanding of US history and culture.

- The Hague / Netherlands : The International Court of Justice ends the dispute between Bahrain and Qatar over sovereignty over the Hawar Islands in favor of Bahrain.

- Los Angeles / United States : In the 73rd ceremony of the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the film Gladiator of British director Ridley Scott as the best film award in 2000. The work Quierosser by German director Florian Gallenberger wins in the Best Short Film category .
- Mainz / Germany : In the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate , voters confirm the social-liberal coalition . The SPD , which was just ahead of the CDU in 1996 , this time received 9.5% more votes than the CDU.
- Northern Europe : Denmark , Finland , Iceland , Norway and Sweden are now fully applying the rules of the Schengen Agreement , which contains agreements and implementing decisions by individual Member States on the elimination of controls at the borders between Member States.
- Stuttgart / Germany : The state elections in Baden-Württemberg brought both CDU and SPD votes. The CDU becomes the strongest force with 44.8% ahead of the SPD with 33.3%. The Republicans party loses half of its share of the vote and will no longer belong to the new state parliament .
- Vienna / Austria : After a five-year break, citizens help the SPÖ to regain an absolute majority of mandates in the state and municipal council elections in the capital region. The FPÖ lands in front of the ÖVP for the third time in a row . In addition, the Greens remain in the Council, while the Liberal Forum has to leave it.

- Brussels / Belgium : The European Commission introduces the definition of the five main industrial groups by regulation . The main groups are intermediate, capital , consumer and durable goods industries as well as power generation . The previous national distinctions no longer apply.

Friday March 30, 2001
- Karlsruhe / Germany : The constitutional organs of the German Bundestag and Bundesrat each apply to the Federal Constitutional Court to ban the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD). In order to establish that it was unconstitutional because of right-wing extremist activities , the federal government submitted its own application for a ban on the NPD two months ago.
