The 2001 state and municipal council elections in Vienna were held on March 25, 2001. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) was able to win back its absolute mandate majority, which it had lost in 1996, and achieved a gain of 7.8 percentage points. With 46.9%, the SPÖ also won nine seats and subsequently provided 52 of a total of 100 members of the state parliament or local councilors. The SPÖ benefited from the heavy losses of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which lost 7.8 percentage points and eight mandates. With a share of the vote of 20.2%, the FPÖ was entitled to 21 mandates. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was able to stabilize again after the state elections in 1996, in which it had its worst result, and gained 1.1 percentage points to 16.4%. In addition, the ÖVP won a mandate and subsequently provided 16 members. Even the Green Party Vienna (Greens) has been improved after the losses in 1996, reaching an increase of 4.5 percentage points a vote share of 12.5%. The Greens thus achieved their best election result to date in Vienna and won four seats in addition to their previous seven mandates. On the other hand, the Liberal Forum , which lost 4.5 percentage points and lost its six seats with a share of 3.4% of the vote, failed because of its return . The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) also failed to enter the state parliament with 0.6%, which the Socialist Left Party (SLP) and the "Bill Clinton - Handy Börse Fanclub" each missed with around 0.01%.

The Viennese state parliament and municipal council for the 17th electoral term was constituted on April 27, 2001 and on that day elected the provincial government of Häupl III .
