The state and municipal council elections in Vienna in 1973 were held on October 21, 1973. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ), which Leopold Gratz presented as the new top candidate, was able to increase its share of the vote for the fifth time in a row and with 60.1% achieved its best result in a state election in Austria since 1945. The SPÖ won 3, 2% and three mandates added, with which the SPÖ reached 66 of the 100 mandates to be awarded.

The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was able to stabilize again after the heavy losses in the state elections in 1969 and posted a profit of 1.5%. With a share of 29.3% of the votes, the ÖVP also won a mandate and subsequently sent 31 members to the state parliament and local council.

The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) also achieved slight gains of 0.4% and achieved a total of 7.7%, but still lost one mandate and only got three seats. The Democratic Progressive Party (DFP), which was represented with three seats in 1969, dropped to 0.3% and lost all of its seats. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) also failed with 2.3% as in 1969 when it entered the state parliament. The European Federalist Party (EFP), which had already stood as a candidate in 1964 and this time with 0.2%, achieved less than a third of its then result, also failed to enter the state parliament .

The Vienna Landtag and municipal council for the 11th electoral term was constituted on November 23, 1973; the first meeting of the municipal council took place on the same day. After the inauguration, the state parliament elected the state government Gratz II .
