Election to the state parliament and municipal council in Vienna 1978
The state and municipal council elections in Vienna in 1978 were held on October 8, 1978. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) lost 2.9% in the election after it had achieved its best result in a state election in 1973, but was able to maintain its top position and its absolute majority of votes and mandates with 57.2%. After losing four mandates, the SPÖ reached 62 of the 100 mandates to be awarded. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) profited from the losses of the SPÖ, increasing its share of the vote by 4.5% and achieving its best result since 1949 with 33.8%. The ÖVP also won 4 mandates and subsequently provided 35 members of the state parliament. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) lost 1.2%. With a share of the vote of 6.5%, however, she was able to keep her previous three mandates. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) failed to enter the state parliament with 1.7%, the electoral community for citizens' initiatives and environmental protection (WBU) with 0.7%, the Communist Federation (KB) with 0.03% and the National Democratic Party Party (NDP) clearly missed with 0.02%. The KB was only in the constituency center, the NDP only in the constituency Inner West.
The Vienna Landtag and municipal council for the 12th electoral term was constituted on November 13, 1978, the first meeting of the municipal council took place on the same day. After the inauguration, the state parliament elected the state government Gratz III .
