Election to the state and municipal council in Vienna in 1949
The regional and municipal council elections in Vienna in 1949 were held on October 9, 1949, on the same day as the parliamentary elections in Austria in 1949 . The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) just lost its absolute majority in Vienna, but was able to defend its absolute majority in mandate. The SPÖ lost 7.3% of the vote as well as six seats and subsequently made 52 of the 100 MPs with 49.9%. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) remained unchanged at 34.9% of the vote, but lost one seat and subsequently sent 35 seats to the state parliament. The " Communists and Left Socialists " (KLS) also achieved the same result with 7.9% as in 1945, when the KPÖ stood alone, but won an additional mandate, which means that the KLS entered the state parliament with 7 seats. The electoral party of the Independent (WdU) also made it into the state parliament when it ran for the first time, and with a share of 6.8% of the vote it acquired the right to 6 seats. On the other hand, the Democratic Union (DU), the Fourth Party (4th Party) and the Patriotic Union failed to enter the state parliament .
The Viennese state parliament and municipal council for the 5th electoral period were constituted on December 5, 1949 and on that day elected the state government and city senate Körner II to form the new Vienna state government.
