The state elections in Salzburg in 1949 were held on October 9, 1949 and were the second state elections in the state of Salzburg after the Second World War . The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) lost 13 percent of the vote as well as three mandates and only had 12 out of 26 members of the newly elected state parliament with 43.6 percent, which meant that it lost its absolute majority in the state parliament. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) also lost six percent and, after losing a mandate, sent 9 members to the state parliament with a 33.6 percent share of the vote. The big election winner was the electoral party of the Independents , which reached 18.5 percent when they ran for the first time and entered the state parliament with 5 members. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), on the other hand, failed to return to the state parliament and lost its only mandate with 3.4 percent. The Democratic Union (DU) and the 4th party (4th party ) also missed their entry into the state parliament .

The state parliament of the 2nd legislative period was constituted on December 1, 1949 and on that day elected the state government Klaus I as the new Salzburg state government.
