The regional elections in Vorarlberg in 1949 took place on October 9, 1949. After 15,156 people were excluded from the right to vote in the state elections in 1945 due to their past in the National Socialist system, these restrictions had largely been removed. In addition, a new party, the electoral party of the Independent (WdU), emerged as the winner of the election. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) lost its two-thirds majority as well as 13.8 percentage points and three mandates when the WdU took office. With a share of the vote of 56.4%, it now provided 16 of 26 members of the state parliament, which, however, allowed it to hold a clear absolute majority. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) also lost 8.2 percentage points and three mandates. With a share of the vote of 19.1%, she achieved four seats and was thus overtaken by the WdU, which received 22.1% and six seats when she first appeared. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) remained practically unchanged at 2.4% and, as in 1945, failed when it entered the state parliament.

The Parliament of the XVII. The legislative period was constituted on October 25, 1949 and on November 14, 1949, the provincial government Ilg II was elected as the new Vorarlberg provincial government.
