Results

The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was able to maintain its position as the leading party and its share of the vote after the big losses in the state elections in 1984 with a minus of 0.6 percentage points. With a share of the votes of 51.0%, it continued to provide 20 of the 36 members of the state parliament and thus defended its absolute majority of votes and mandates.

The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ), on the other hand, lost 2.7 percentage points and achieved the second worst state election result in Vorarlberg in the Second Republic to date with a share of 21.29% of the vote. In addition, she lost one mandate and subsequently only sent eight members to the Vorarlberg state parliament.

The big winner, however, was the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which had won numerous elections after Jörg Haider took over the party chairmanship in 1986 and achieved a strong increase in votes of 5.6 percentage points in Vorarlberg. With a share of the vote of 16.1%, the FPÖ achieved its best result since 1969 and won three additional mandates, whereby it had six members in the newly elected state parliament.

In contrast, the winner of the 1984 state elections, the Greens, lost a lot of votes. After the Alternative List and the United Greens Austria (AL / VGÖ) stood together in 1984, the Greens entered separately as the Green Alternative Vorarlberg (GAV) and The Greens Vorarlbergs (DGV). While the Green Alternative Vorarlberg was close to the parliamentary club of the Green Alternative , the list Die Grünen Vorarlbergs was a VGÖ-affiliated group. While the Green Alternative Vorarlberg made it into the state parliament with 5.2% and two mandates, the DGV narrowly failed with 4.91%.

The Austrian Communist Party (KPÖ) with 0.7% and the Georg Fritz list (FRITZ) with 0.8% failed to enter the state parliament .
