State election in Salzburg 1979
The state election in Salzburg 1979 was carried out on March 25, 1979 and was the eighth state election in the state of Salzburg in the Second Republic. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) lost 1.8 percent and one mandate, with the ÖVP having 17 members with 45.4 percent in the newly elected state parliament. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) was able to grow again after the heavy losses in the state elections in 1974 and recorded a plus of 2.9 percent as well as winning a mandate. With 39.1 percent, the SPÖ was able to provide 14 of the 36 seats. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), on the other hand, continued its downward trend from 1974 and lost 2.2 percent. With a share of the vote of 13.3 percent, however, the FPÖ was able to maintain its five-seat mandate. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), on the other hand, failed with 0.4 percent for the seventh time in a row to enter the state parliament. This was also missed by the "United Citizens' Initiative" Rettet Salzburg "- Citizens List" (BL), which had only stood as a candidate in the Salzburg city constituency and had achieved 1.8 percent.
The Landtag of the 8th legislative period was constituted on May 16, 1979 and on the same day elected the Provincial Government Haslauer II as the new Provincial Government of Salzburg.
