State election in Salzburg 2004
The 2004 state elections in Salzburg took place on March 7, 2004 . With a landslide victory, the SPÖ was able to achieve first place for the first time in the second republic and nominate top candidate Gabi Burgstaller as governor . For the SPÖ, up to the state elections in Styria in 2015 (in which the FPÖ broke the record), it was the largest percentage gain that a party in Austria could ever achieve in state elections.
Wilfried Haslauer , the ÖVP's top candidate , had to be satisfied with the position of Deputy Governor due to slight losses (−0.8 percent), the SPÖ was able to win voters from all directions (+13.1 percent), but most of all from the FPÖ , which was more than halved (−10.9 percent).
The Greens gained slightly (+2.6 percent), but were unable to achieve a third mandate.
Although there was now a red-green majority in the Salzburg state parliament for the first time, such a coalition was ruled out at the beginning by Burgstaller, which rather promoted cooperation with the ÖVP.
