State election in Salzburg in 1989
The state election in Salzburg in 1989 was held on March 12, 1989 and was the tenth state election in the state of Salzburg in the Second Republic. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) lost 6.2 percentage points and three seats , the absolute majority of votes and seats it had only achieved in 1984 , and only 16 of 36 members of the state parliament with 44.0 percent. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) also lost the 1989 election after 1984 and had to give up a seat with a loss of 3.8 percentage points. With 31.3 percent, the SPÖ was only able to secure 13 seats in the state parliament. The big winner of the election was the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which found itself on the upswing after Jörg Haider came to power in the Federal FPÖ. She gained 7.6 percentage points and was able to win two mandates. With a total of 16.4 percent, the FPÖ was entitled to six mandates. The civil list Salzburg - City, Green (BL) moved to two unsuccessful candidates in 1989 for the first time with two mandatories in the state legislature, where it reached an increase of 1.9 percent and recorded a total of 6.2 percent. The United Green Austria (VGÖ), however, failed with 1.8 percent as well as the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) with 0.5 percent in the entry into the state parliament.
The state parliament of the 10th legislative period was constituted on May 3, 1989 and on the same day elected the state government Katschthaler as the new Salzburg state government.
