Chironomus riparius is a mosquito within the family of mosquitoes (Chironomidae).

features

The mosquitoes have a body length of 7 to 8 millimeters. The head and thorax are yellowish white in color and have three black stripes. The legs are yellowish in color. The pronotum is cambered in the middle like a collar. The tergites on the abdomen have no impressions near the front edge. The twelfth antennae in males is five times longer than the first through twelfth combined. In the females, the third to fifth antennae are bottle-shaped, the sixth is slightly more than twice as long as the fifth. The basal tarsal segment is a third longer than the splint ( tibia ).

Way of life and distribution

The animals are found in large parts of Europe. The larvae develop in slowly flowing meadow streams.

In the saprobic system, the species is an indicator of waters with poor water quality (saprobic index 3.6).
