Hurl Luther III. Beechum (born May 2, 1973 in Des Moines , Iowa ) is a retired American - German basketball player .

Career

Beechum played from 1991 to 1995 at Iowa State University and came in 107 games to an average of 5.5 points. With 128 three-point throws hit, he proved his strength as a distance shooter.

After graduating from Iowa State University, Beechum moved to Germany to the Telekom Baskets Bonn . There, as in his home country, he made a name for himself above all for his accuracy from beyond the triple line . With twelve converted three-point throws in one game (1998 against Trier) and 161 successful three-point throws in one season, he set Bundesliga records. He played in Bonn until 2002 before moving to the ACB league in Spain . For Cáceres CB he scored an average of 15.1 points per encounter in 2002/03 and hit 102 of his 257 three-point throws. Also in the following season 2003/04 Beechum came in the colors of Jabones Pardo Fuenlabrada on a double-digit point average (11.9).

For the 2004/2005 season he returned to Germany and played for Brose Baskets Bamberg . With the Franks he became German champion in 2005. Beechum was involved in the success in the championship year with 16.6 points per match (maximum team value) and was the best Bamberg shooter with 96 three-point throws. During the race for the championship he tore a cruciate ligament in April 2005. Due to the injury, he missed much of the 2005/2006 season. It was not until 2006 that he played a few games for the Walter Tigers Tübingen . He scored 2,616 points in the Bundesliga during his career. Until 2009 Beechum played for clubs in Spain, Greece and the Czech Republic. In 2009 he retired from competitive sports and returned to the USA with his family.

Beechum, who is descended from German ancestors, was a member of the German national team in 2000 and 2001 and played 13 international matches. His best yield in the national jersey was 13 points in a European Championship qualifier against Ireland in November 2001.

In the fall of 2015, Beechum, whose nickname was "Gunman from Iowa" during his basketball career, shot a man in the town of Glenwood , Iowa, with a handgun and hit him in the leg. Beechum said he acted in self-defense after an argument broke out between Beechum's stepfather and a group of young adults in front of his mother's house. Shortly before the trial, the case was dropped and, according to the police investigation report, Beechum admitted that his shot was justified.
