Werner S. Landecker (born April 30, 1911 in Berlin ; † May 19, 2002 in Ann Arbor , Michigan , USA ) was a German-American legal scholar and sociologist .

Live and act

Landecker was already working on sociological issues as a law student at the University of Berlin . In 1936 he was with the work on the sociology of international law Dr. jur. PhD . The professing Jew left Germany after completing his doctorate.

In the USA he submitted a second dissertation and also received a doctorate in sociology. First he taught at Indiana University , then until his retirement as a professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He became internationally known for his contributions to the research areas " Social Stratification " and " Sociology of Knowledge ".

Landecker had been blind since he was 40 and had to have his wife and other helpers read specialist publications to him. He only returned to Germany as a visiting professor. Günther Lüschen reports:

When he started a lecture on "Problems of the Sociology of Science" in the "Sociological Upper Seminar" of the University of Cologne on May 15, 1985, he was overwhelmed by the rigor of his empirical-theoretical lecture, but also the ideas, willy-nilly, without a written concept, and he had to give the lecture abort. In addition, there were probably memories of well over 40 years in which he had been away from Germany. Those who were present at that moment will have felt the tragedy and greatness of this person.
