- Athens / Greece : The Mediterranean state becomes a member of the European Economic and Monetary Union . With this step, Greece's own currency ( drachma ) will be replaced by the euro in one year .
- Bern / Switzerland : The SP politician Moritz Leuenberger takes up his post as Federal President .
- New York / United States : Ireland , Colombia , Mauritius , Norway and Singapore are new non-permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations .
- Stockholm / Sweden : Sweden takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from France . The Office of the Government of the EC receives Göran Persson .

- Bonn / Germany : The Bundeswehr begins with basic training for women on weapons.
Wednesday January 3, 2001
- Washington, DC / United States : The House of Representatives and the United States Senate are meeting for the first time after the November 2000 election. For the next 17 days, for the first time in US history, a couple will be represented in both the executive (President Bill Clinton ) and the legislature (Senator Hillary Clinton ).
Saturday 6th January 2001
- Bangkok / Thailand : General Elections
- Bischofshofen / Austria : Adam Małysz from Poland wins the 49th Four Hills Tournament ahead of Janne Ahonen from Finland .
- Jerusalem / Israel : Ariel Sharon is elected as the new Prime Minister.
- Washington, DC / United States : Vice President Al Gore ( Democratic Party ), as Chairman of the US Senate, announces the results of the Electoral Panel for the election of the 43rd US President . George W. Bush ( Republican Party ) received 271 votes and Gore himself 266. At least one Democratic elector did not vote for his own candidate.

- Accra / Ghana : John Agyekum Kufuor becomes President.
Wednesday January 10, 2001
- Washington, DC / United States : The American airline American Airlines announced today that they, the national competitor Trans World Airlines will take over (TWA) this spring. The TWA was the largest airline in the world under the command of Howard Hughes in the 1960s.

- Chemnitz / Germany : DJ Ötzi wins the folk music crown .
- El Salvador : The January 2001 earthquake in El Salvador with a magnitude of 7.7 struck El Salvador and other Central American countries.

- Lisbon / Portugal : Dr. Jorge Sampaio is confirmed in office as President.
Monday January 15, 2001
- San Francisco / United States : The Wikipedia is as a creative precursor to online - encyclopedia Nupedia founded. In Wikipedia, the authors are allowed to personally add all contributions to the article namespace and then an improvement process begins. In Nupedia, on the other hand, which has been under construction since July 2000, articles go through multiple reviews before they are published.

- Galapagos Islands / Ecuador : The tanker Jessica runs aground on the archipelago in the Pacific and causes the largest oil pollution in the region to date .

- Manila / Philippines : Gloria Macapagal Arroyo becomes president.
- Washington, DC / United States : George W. Bush is sworn in as the new President of the United States .

- Strasbourg / France : Armenia and Azerbaijan join the Council of Europe as 42nd and 43rd member states .
Friday January 26, 2001
- Kinshasa / DR Congo : 29-year-old Joseph Kabila becomes president. His father Laurent-Désiré Kabila ruled the country dictatorially until his death a few days ago .

- Tampa / United States : The Super Bowl XXXV in American football between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants ends 34: 7.
Tuesday January 30, 2001
- Karlsruhe / Germany : The Federal Government provides the Constitutional Court , the party the request, National Democratic Party of Germany to ban because they them as right-wing rank. The court is supposed to determine whether the party is unconstitutional .
