- Sydney / Australia : The Summer Olympics end with the traditional closing ceremony. The most successful nation is the United States with 94 medals. 56 medals go to Germany , nine to Switzerland and three to Austria .
Monday October 2, 2000
- Düsseldorf / Germany : An arson attack hits the New Synagogue . The media and political public suspect a reference to the Day of German Unity .
- London / United Kingdom : The Human Rights Act ( German Human Rights Act ) for the entire kingdom comes into force, so are British citizens all the rights of the European Convention on Human Rights to.
Tuesday 3rd October 2000
- Dresden / Germany : In his speech on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of German unity , Federal President Johannes Rau emphasized that “really nobody” could “wish the old GDR back”. He is alluding to the phenomenon of Ostalgie and current disenchantment with politics in eastern Germany.
- Dresden / Germany : After the arson attack on the New Synagogue in Düsseldorf on the night of October 3, most of the media assume that right-wing extremists are perpetrators. During the night there were several attacks on Jewish institutions or institutions related to Judaism, e.g. B. to the Buchenwald memorial in the former Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar . The chairman of the Central Council of Jews, Paul Spiegel, expresses skepticism as to whether "it was and is right to build up Jewish communities in Germany [...]".
- Luxembourg / Luxembourg : In the SIMAP ruling, the European Court of Justice found that the on- call duty of Spanish doctors is not a rest period but working time . The ruling affects hospital staffing plans across the EU .
- Taipei / Taiwan : Tang Fei resigns as Prime Minister.
Wednesday October 4, 2000
- Düsseldorf / Germany : On the second day after the arson attack on the New Synagogue in Düsseldorf, Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder calls for a " revolt of the decent " against right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism . The Jewish historian Michael Wolffsohn points out that an uprising is “anything but a legitimate act”. He prefers a powerful state executive .

Friday October 6, 2000
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The European Central Bank is raising the key interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to 4.75%. The rate hike cycle has continued since the third stage of the European Economic and Monetary Union in January 1999, when the interest rate was 3.0%.

- Luxembourg / Luxembourg : Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and Nassau becomes head of state.
- Belgrade / Yugoslavia : Vojislav Koštunica becomes new president.

- Nepal : The Slovenian extreme skier Davo Karničar is the first person to complete a full descent from Mount Everest .
- Suzuka / Japan : the German Michael Schumacher wins in Ferrari F1-2000 the Japanese Grand Prix . This means that before the last race he is the winner of the Formula 1 World Championship and can celebrate his third World Championship title after 1994 and 1995.
- Warsaw / Poland : The eligible voters confirm the incumbent Aleksander Kwaśniewski from the Federation of the Democratic Left as president from among twelve candidates .

- Stockholm / Sweden : This year's Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine will go to the Swede Arvid Carlsson , the American Paul Greengard and his compatriot Eric Kandel, born in Austria in 1929, “for their discoveries about signal transmission in the nervous system ”.
Tuesday October 10, 2000
- Geneva / Switzerland : Oman is accepted into the World Trade Organization ( WTO).
- Sri Jayewardenepura / Sri Lanka : In the parliamentary elections , the People's Alliance (PA) failed to gain a parliamentary majority, but remains the strongest political force with around 45% of the vote. The leading party in the PA, President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Freedom Party , now has to find new coalition partners.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The American Alan J. Heeger , the New Zealander Alan MacDiarmid and the Japanese Hideki Shirakawa will receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year . The foundation honors her work in research into macromolecular substances . The Nobel Prize for Physics will be awarded this year to the Russian Shores Iwanowitsch Alfjorow , the German Herbert Kroemer and the American Jack Kilby for their technical advancements in the field of electronics .

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Americans James Heckman and Daniel McFadden will receive the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics this year .
Thursday October 12, 2000
- Stockholm / Sweden : The French Gao Xingjian , born in China in 1940 , received the Nobel Prize for Literature this year . One of his most famous works is The Mountain of the Soul .
- Aden / Yemen : 17 US soldiers are killed and 39 injured in an explosives attack on the USS Cole .

- Oslo / Norway : The South Korean Kim Dae-jung will receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize . The committee wants the President of South Korea , who has been in office since February 1998 , a . a. for his courtesy towards the North Korean leadership.

- Kailua-Kona / United States : Natascha Badmann from Switzerland wins the women's competition at the Ironman Hawaii triathlon competition for the second time since 1998 . Peter Reid from Canada wins in the men's category .
- Cologne / Germany : The Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko becomes world heavyweight champion of the World Boxing Organization by beating title holder Chris Byrd from the United States on points .

- Graz / Austria : In the elections for the Styrian Landtag , the ÖVP has made strong gains and comes close to an absolute majority with a share of 47.29% of the votes. The SPÖ is losing voters again and is below 33%. The FPÖ loses three mandates, the Greens win one, the Liberals have to leave parliament.
- Lugano / Switzerland : Six months after the resignation of the party president of the Social Democratic Party (SP) Ursula Koch , the delegates of the SP party congress elect Christiane Brunner as the new president.

- Vienna / Austria : At the first awarding of the Nestroy Theater Prize , Birgit Doll is recognized as best actress and Gert Voss as best actor.

- Hurricane Oratia causes damage of millions in Northern and Central Europe. In the UK, which was badly affected, five people died. There were three storm victims in France.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : On the first trading day of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, the company's individual shares are listed at EUR 11.00 . The company is an outsourcing of the registered club Borussia Dortmund and is supposed to collect capital for the football licensed players department.
- Hannover / Germany : The world exhibition Expo comes to an end. The federal government compensates the deficit of around 2 billion D-Marks with tax revenue . The expo was based on an initiative by Deutsche Messe AG Hanover .
- Honolulu / United States : The long-distance swimmer Peggy can win and the first open water World Cup competition over 5 km of the women and thus wins the first World Cup success for Germany in a long distance.
- Taoyuan / Taiwan : When starting from the airport Taiwan Taoyuan crashed a Boeing 747 of Singapore Airlines after she fell accidentally to a blocked due to construction work and shortened runway. When attempting to start, 83 of the 179 inmates are killed.
