Geographical location of the members of CEFTA, the EU, EFTA and the CIS

On January 1, 2007, the CEFTA was expanded to include the so-called " Western Balkan States" and Moldova . Some of the admission criteria were relaxed. The accession criteria for the new states were no longer membership of the World Trade Organization (WTO) or institutionalized relations with the EU , since Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia , for example, are neither members of the WTO nor had they signed a Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU .

The representatives of Albania, Bulgaria, the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo on behalf of Kosovo, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro and Romania initialed the treaty applying the CEFTA to their states in Brussels on November 9, 2006, Serbia on November 15, 2006 . December. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia still had reservations and wanted better contractual terms than those stipulated in some previous bilateral agreements, especially with regard to certain agricultural products. The contract was ratified on December 19, 2006; the terms of the contract were not renegotiated.

    Importance of the European perspective

The European perspective for the states of Southeast Europe is considered the most important criterion for the development of the entire region and thus for the maintenance of peace in Europe. The CEFTA aims to ensure political stability through economic alliances.
