The Moldovan leu (plural: lei ) is the official currency in the Republic of Moldova . The smallest unit is 1 Ban (b), where 1 Leu (MDL) is divided into 100 Bani just like in Romania. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the independence of the Republic of Moldova, the Russian ruble was abolished in November 1993 and replaced by the new currency , the Moldovan leu. “Leu” means “lion” in Romanian .

Ștefan cel Mare is shown on the front . To the right of him is a V (for victorie ), which is encircled by the first two verses of the ballad Miorița : Pe-un picior de plai, pe-o gură de rai .
