Căpriana Monastery
The Căpriana monastery is a monastery in Căpriana, Străşeni , Moldova . It is located about 40 km northwest of Chișinău .
history
The first documentary mention of the Căpriana monastery took place in 1429 in a document from the Moldovan prince Alexander the Good . Originally made of wood, a few decades later it was given a stone church under the reign of Stephen the Great . In the following years the monastery fell into disrepair until the voivode Peter IV Rareș had it rebuilt in the years 1542 to 1545.
During the Russian rule over Vltava in 1903, the building ensemble was expanded again with the construction of the winter church. Closed for decades during the Soviet era, the monastery was extensively renovated between 2003 and 2005.

Due to its great cultural importance for Moldova, the Căpriana monastery serves as the motif for the back of the 1 leu banknotes.
