The denarius ( Macedonian денар ; plural денари / denari , internationally also denars) is the currency in North Macedonia .

The ISO 4217 abbreviation for the denarius is MKD . It is divided into 100 deni. The denis are no longer needed today. They are only distributed to collectors. The name is derived from the Roman coin denarius .

After North Macedonia gained independence in 1992, the denarius replaced the Yugoslav dinar .

50 deni coin

The 50 deni coin is the only deni coin. Today it is no longer needed. It is distributed exclusively to collectors. It represents a flying seagull .

1 denarius coin

The 1 denarius coin represents a shepherd dog in the Šar Planina .

2 denarius coin

The 2 denarius coin represents an Ohrid trout .

5 denarius coin

The 5 denarius coin represents a lynx .

10 denarius coin

The 10 denarius coin represents the mosaic of a peacock in the baptistery of Stobi .

50 denarius coin

The 50 denarius coin depicts the head of the Archangel Gabriel from a fresco in the St. George's Monastery in Kurbinovo .

100 denar note

The front of the 100 denarius note shows the view of Skopje in the Ottoman period. The reverse shows the ceiling of an Albanian house.

200 denarius note

The front of the 200 denarius note shows the terracotta relief from Vinica (scene from the Old Testament, Psalm 41). On the back it shows artistic elements of the facade of the Colorful Mosque (Šarena Džamija) from Tetovo and marble tiles from the Isaak Beg Mosque (Isak Džamija) from Bitola.

500 denarius note

The front of the 500 denarius note shows a poppy plant . On the back there is a golden Macedonian death mask that was found during excavations in the Pelagonia region. In 2003 new security features were added.

1000 denar note

The front of the 1000 denar note shows the icon of Mary from the St. Vrachi Mali Church in Ohrid. The reverse shows a section of the St. Sofia Church in Ohrid. In 2003 new security features were introduced added.

2000 denarius note

The front of the 2000 denarius note shows a Macedonian wedding dress. On the reverse, it shows the decoration of the inside of a gilded bowl from the 16th century (“source of life” with a pair of peacocks).

5000 denarius note

The front of the 5000 denarius note shows the bronze statue of the maenad (6th century BC) from Tetovo . The reverse shows a mosaic from the ruins of the city of Herakleia Lynkestis , today Bitola , showing a dog shows a tree.
