In general, little data is available on the behavior and occurrence of the fish. The taxonomy should also be checked using current scientific methods.

The Ohrid trout becomes around 60 centimeters long. The silvery body is lined with black spots, especially in the upper part. Red dots are mainly found along the sidelines. The flesh is pink.

The Ohrid trout is a tasty food fish, which leads to severe overfishing , so that it was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List . In 2001 the status was changed to insufficient data . While fish in North Macedonia is rarely fished out of the lake after a ban in 2005, on the Albanian side of the lake - pushed by poverty - nobody cared about species protection for a long time: the fish was ruthlessly hunted. However, since November 14, 2013, all fishing in Lake Ohrid has been banned in Albania. The Ohrid trout is also farmed in both countries . From 1985 to 2000, more than 100,000 kilograms of trout were fished out of the lake, with a sharp decline on the Macedonian side since 1991 being quickly made up for on the Albanian side. Today attempts are being made to support the species through fish farming at institutes in Ohrid and Struga .

When the stocks were not threatened, fish weighing up to five kilograms were caught. The extremes are a length of 76 centimeters and a weight of 6490 grams. Releases in other lakes have proven to be unsuccessful.
