The total solar eclipse of June 21, 2001 was the first central solar eclipse of the third millennium and had a maximum total duration of almost five minutes. The totality zone began east of South America in the Atlantic and before the umbra hit the African continent, the maximum of the eclipse was reached. The corridor of total eclipse stretched in southern Africa across Angola , Zambia , Zimbabwe and Mozambique . Before the eclipse ended in the southern Indian Ocean , the umbra crossed Madagascar . The most popular destination for observing the darkness was Zambia, especially the capital Lusaka , which was in the totality zone.

The darkness could not be observed from Europe .
