Presidential election in Iran 2001
The 2001 Iranian presidential election took place on June 8, 2001. The reformer Mohammad Chātami received 77% of the vote and was thus re-elected.
prehistory
The election was preceded by Chātami's first term of office, which was initially marked by hopes of Western democracies for a reform process in Iran. Chātami struck liberal tones and made it his goal to liberalize society, which is permeated by state regulations and censorship. In particular, freedom of the press, freedom of expression and women's rights were on his agenda. Since the parliamentary elections on February 18, 2000 , the parliament has also been in the hands of reformers. However, Chātami faced with his reform approaches the resistance of the theocratic institutions around the supreme spiritual leader Seyyed Ali Chamenei . The Guardian Council prevented most of the reform laws and severely limited Chātami's influence.
At the time of the 2001 presidential election, large sections of the reform-minded population had already felt a certain resignation about the powerlessness of the government and parliament. Still, the reformers were able to mobilize their electorate and the turnout was 67%.
As in all elections, the Guardian Council had banned most of the candidates for the office of president from running. Out of 814 applicants, only 10 were allowed to vote.
