Presidential election in Iran 2017
The presidential election in Iran took place on May 19, 2017, at the same time as local elections. With a turnout of 73.1%, the incumbent President Hassan Rohani was able to prevail with 57.1% of the vote against Ebrahim Raissi , the confidante of the supreme religious leader Ali Khamenei , with 38.3%.
Candidates
1636 people initially applied for the election, including 137 women. The Guardian Council allowed six candidacies:
- Hassan Rouhani , acting President of the country
- Ebrahim Raissi , confidante of the Supreme Religious Leader Ali Khamenei
- Mostafa Mirsalim , Minister of Culture from 1992 to 1997
- Mostafa Hashemitaba , Vice President from 1994 to 2001 under Hashemi Rafsanjani
Two candidates withdrew their applications after admission:
- Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf , Lord Mayor of Tehran, on behalf of Raissi
- Eshagh Dschahangiri , Acting Vice President, in favor of Rouhani
Former President Mahmoud Ahmadineschad and former Vice President Hamid Baghaie were not admitted.
