Presidential election in Iran in 1989
The 1989 presidential elections in Iran took place on July 28, 1989 and made Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani president.
prehistory
On June 3, 1989, died Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of jurist-ruler of Iran, and the symbol of the Islamic Revolution . The constitution drafted and tailored to him by Khomeini had to be changed as no one met the requirements placed on the head of state. In the course of this constitutional revision, the office of President was strengthened at the insistence of the previous President of Parliament Ali-Akbar Hāschemi Rafsanjāni.
On July 28, 1989, a constitutional referendum, held at the same time, brought the constitutional amendment into force and a new president was elected. The previous incumbent Seyyed Ali Chāmene'i followed Khomeini as the chief legal scholar. 79 candidates wanted to run for election, but the Guardian Council forbade 77 of them to run. One of the two approved candidates was Rafsanjani, who was considered a big favorite against the much less known Abbas Sheibani.
Result
As expected, the election ended with a clear victory for Rafsanjani. Of the 16,452,677 votes cast, he received 15,550,528.
