Elections to the Council of Experts of Iran in 2006

The 2006 elections to the Iranian Expert Council took place on December 15, 2006. The highlight of the fourth election to the Expert Council , which is made by the people every 8 years, was the media-effective polarization between the fundamentalist Ayatollah Mohammad Taqi Mesbah Yazdi and the pragmatic Ayatollah Rafsanjani . The fight for the votes of the province of Tehran , which allocates 16 seats for the Expert Council far more than other provinces, was decisive for the later chairmanship of the Expert Council.

The election ended with a victory for the moderate clerics over the hardliners. Ali-Akbar Hāschemi Rafsanjāni sovereignly won the province of Tehran and thus took over the chairmanship of the assembly of experts; Ali Meschkini became the age president (honorary) .
