The Islamic Republic News Agency ( Persian : خبرگزاری جمهوری اسلامی ايران; German self-name News Agency of the Islamic Republic ), or IRNA or Irna for short, is the official news agency of Iran .

history

The agency was founded by the government in 1934 under the name Pars News Agency as a department of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and incorporated into the Ministry of Information and Tourism in 1954. The news agency was renamed the Islamic Republic News Agency in 1981 and is controlled by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Leadership .

After calling for the agency to be opened to the private sector in accordance with Article 44 of the Constitution, the director appealed to the revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ali Khamene'i against privatization, whereupon the latter declared that Irna would remain a government institution.

After further suggestions from August 2010, the news agency should agree

  • the media department of the Ministry of Culture and with
  • the Iranian Student News Agency Isna and also with
  • Iranian newspapers and magazines as well as with the
  • Information office of the Presidential Office and also the
  • Iranian national television broadcaster Seda va Sima work together.

On January 18, 2011, the presidential office of Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad took over the Irna as a sub-organization. The President's Chief of Staff is Esfandiar Rahim Maschaie .

Irna has 60 offices in Iran and 30 offices abroad. The news agency publishes seven magazines and newspapers, including Iran Daily.
