Presidential election in Iran 1985
The 1985 Iranian presidential election took place on August 16, 1985 . The incumbent President Seyyed Ali Chamene'i was confirmed in office.
prehistory
Khamenei's renewed candidacy was only officially announced shortly before the election and at the urging of the Supreme Legal Scholar Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini . Iran was at the time in the First Gulf War . After Khamenei announced his candidacy, he was considered a clear favorite. Two other candidates, Habibollah Asgar-Owladi and Mahmoud Kashani, were nominated, Mehdi Bāzargān disqualified by the Guardian Council before the election . The turnout was 54.78%.
