Varenholz Castle is a castle in the Weser Renaissance style in the municipality of Kalletal in the Lippe district . In the castle today is private school internat .

location

The castle is located in the village of Varenholz in the municipality of Kalletal, south of the Weser . Originally the castle was located directly on the Weser, but the course of the river has now shifted to the north. A four-arched bridge made of rubble stones, which bears the date 1753, still testifies to the earlier course of the river.

The Evangelical Reformed Church Varenholz is located on the outer ring wall of the palace complex . The church building consists of a cross-shaped hall with a flat-roofed nave from 1500, the vaulted north wing from the 14th century and the south wing with portal from 1839.

To the south is the domain that originally belonged to the castle .

history

Varenholz Castle before 1909

A castle was first mentioned in 1188 , which was then owned by Messrs Vornholte. In 1323, Simon I. zur Lippe acquired the castle from the Lords of Varenholz and was thus able to expand his domain in the north to the Weser.

The building history of today's palace complex dates back to 1540. Between 1591 and 1600 Count Simon VI. zu Lippe expand the castle into one of the most important buildings of the Weser Renaissance .

Under the National Socialists , the castle served as a training center for the Association of German Girls (BDM). From 1945 to 1949 the UFA Universum Filmgesellschaft was housed in the building. Then the pedagogue Elisabeth Engels set up a boarding school in the premises.

Today the castle is owned by the Lippe regional association and houses Schloss Varenholz GmbH, boarding company for child and youth welfare.

Tell the "White Lady"

The legend has it that in Varenholz with clear full moon nights, a White Lady as a good-natured spirit have appeared pregnant women. It is known from documents that a lady-in-waiting by the name of Katharina Gerstein lived at the castle at that time. The lady-in-waiting is said to have had ten children and was beautiful. When her husband had to go into exile for political reasons, she disappeared without a trace and was never seen again. Later she appeared as a ghost. Sometimes she was portrayed as the herald of impending misfortune.

Organ of the castle church

The organ of the castle church was built in 1748 by the organ builder Christian Klausing ( Herford ) as a unique instrument with 9 registers and an attached pedal . The instrument was expanded in 1840 to include an independent pedal unit. Today the instrument has 14 registers on a manual and pedal. The case , wind chest and seven registers have been preserved from the historic organ .
