history

Varenholz Castle

Varenholz Castle is located in Varenholz . In 1188 it was first mentioned as a property of the Vornholte men. In 1924 the Veltheim high-wire ferry was set up. In 1925 the ferry accident in Veltheim occurred there . 81 soldiers of the Reichswehr drowned here while crossing from Veltheim to Varenholz, which is still considered the greatest misfortune of the German army in times of peace. Since then, all recruits had to learn to swim with the Reichswehr and later with the Wehrmacht . Today a memorial commemorates the accident. From 1945 to 1949, Varenholz Castle was rented by the Universum Film (UFA) film company. Then it became a boarding school, today it houses a private secondary school with boarding school and is owned by the Lippe regional association .

Varenholz was incorporated into the municipality of Kalletal on January 1, 1969 .
