The evangelical regional church residents of Veltheim belong to the Evangelical parish of Veltheim; Its center is the St. Peter and Paul Church in the Weser Valley , as well as the parish hall on the hill by the new cemetery. Since June 1, 2007, a parish connection has been set up between the Evangelical Lutheran parish Hausberge and the Evangelical parish Veltheim; This means that the Veltheim pastor is also responsible for the pastoral care of the majority of the Evangelical regional church members in Lohfeld.

St. Petri Church in Veltheim

In addition to the parish of the regional church, St. Petri is a congregation of the independent Evangelical Lutheran Church , which was formed after the Second World War by splitting off part of the parish members of the Evangelical regional church parish of Veltheim.

In 1995 the Free Evangelical Christian Congregation Veltheim was established in the center of Veltheim.

Attractions

Veltheim high wire ferry

Veltheim and its mill are part of the Westphalian Mill Road and the Mill Route . The windmill was built in 1903 as a replacement for a Erdholländer built in 1870, which initially stood on the Bockshornberg. The current Wall Dutchman has a plastered conical brick tower. It is known of the mill, built in 1870, that the wings hung so low that the miller's twelve-year-old son was fatally injured while turning; because of a lightning strike this mill had to be demolished.

The St. Peter and Paul Church has a Romanesque tower; the old cemetery, which was used from 1868 to 1954, now serves as a park with a resting place for users of the Weser cycle path.

The Weser ferry Veltheim / Varenholz is a yaw cable ferry that is operated today as a pure passenger ferry , especially for hikers and cyclists on weekends and public holidays. It was evidently mentioned for the first time in 1661, but existed much earlier. In 1786 a long lease contract was signed with the Schäfer family for the ferry.

Memorial to the ferry disaster of 1925

An obelisk at the ferry station commemorates the great ferry accident of 1925.

Ferry failure during Reichswehr exercise

In March 1925, 167 fully equipped soldiers were to be transferred on a ferry built from open pontoons by Minden pioneers near the location of the Gierseilfähre ; a civilian was allowed to ride. The ferry overturned due to severe overcrowding or, for this number of people, a faulty design (due to the compliance with outdated regulations). 81 people died (including the civilian and 80 soldiers), among other things because the victims in full gear could not save themselves; numerous victims could not swim either. One of the survivors was Fritz Schmidt from Eisbergen , who later made a career in the NSDAP and died in occupied France in 1943.

The station has been closed, however, the next stops are Vlotho and Rinteln. A reactivation is not planned, but this has been under discussion for years for the neighboring icebergs stop.
