Location of Costedt in Porta Westfalica
|
Costedt (official spelling in 1939: Kostedt ) is a district of the city of Porta Westfalica in the Minden-Lübbecke district in East Westphalia .
geography
Costedt is located south of the Wiehen and Weser Mountains and in the great bend of the Weser . Costedt is the smallest district in the city of Porta Westfalica. In the east, Costedt borders on the Holzhausen district , in the north and west, separated by the Weser , on the Bad Oeynhausen districts of Dehme and Rehme , and in the south on the district of Vennebeck .
history
As early as 1230, when the name Costede was mentioned for the first time in a papal document, the farms were on the edge of the small spur that pushes itself into the Weseraue. The former episcopal table goods changed over time to today's village center on the one hand and the Rothenhoff manor on the other.
The manor is closely linked to the military history of the past 400 years. For example, it was used by the English between 1945 and 1954 as the location of the Commander in Chief of the British Army of the Rhine . Prominent guests at this time included Princess Margaret and Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh , as well as Field Marshal Bernard L. Montgomery and General Dwight D. Eisenhower at the Rothenhoff manor.
The farm buildings and the manor house of the manor date from the era of the Bremen merchant family Caesar, who owned the estate from 1822 to 1915. The mansion was built as a new building in 1863 according to plans by the royal master builder Borring in the late Classicist style and supplemented with an English landscape park.
From the Weser cycle path you can still see the old village structure and take a look at the well-tended manor.
Until the municipal reorganization on January 1, 1973, Costedt was an independent municipality with a total area of around 5.82 km² and 626 inhabitants and belonged to the office of Hausberge in the Minden district . At the moment (December 31, 2017) Costedt has 525 inhabitants.
archeology
About 350 m west of the center of Costedt, a burial ground from the Roman Empire was excavated. It comprises 44 graves from around AD 150 to 260. The dead were buried in the fire, and most of the graves were also burnt. The graves are likely to go back to two farms, on which a total of about 18 people lived. A special find is a clay vessel that is decorated with fine incised lines on the outside; you can see highly abstract representations, probably the sun, moon and a deer. In June 2009 the vessel was in the exhibition at the Museum of Archeology in Herne.
politics
Costedt belongs with Möllbergen , Holtrup and Vennebeck to the District Committee VI of the city of Porta Westfalica. The chairman is Siegfried Linder.
Attractions
The local recreation facility Großer Weserbogen and the water areas of the old ponds are worth seeing. The Weserradweg cycle path leads through the district.
