Palmbräu Eppingen GmbH & Co. KG is a traditional brewery in Eppingen in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The brewery was founded in 1835 by Jakob Zorn (1812–1882) in his wine tavern in Eppingen, Baden . The company expanded under his son Franz Zorn (1839–1917). The inn was well frequented at the time, so that up to 1000 liters of beer were served on Sundays . It was also Franz Zorn who brought palm trees from Italy, decorated the inn with them and renamed the Gasthaus zur Palme , from which the name Palmbräu was derived. The house brewery developed in family hands, especially under the descendants Emil and Reinhold Zorn, into a considerable large-scale operation, which was sold to most of the major cities in southwest Germany as early as 1970.

Palmbräu became known, among other things, for its special beers, including the strong beer Schwarzer Zornickel with 8.5% alcohol by volume and the special draft beer for the Unterländer Volksfest that was brewed until 2008 . In addition to Pils Unser Beste , the company also sells export and wheat beer as well as various mixed beer beverages. In 2012 the beer output was around 30,000 hl. The company building is known to many visitors to the city due to the prominent location of the glazed brewhouse near Eppingen's town hall.

The brewery obtains its raw materials, namely the brewing barley , from a producer group consisting of around 500 farmers from the Kraichgau , making the Kraichgau the second largest contiguous area in Germany for controlled, integrated brewing barley cultivation.

In 2002 Palmbräu had to file for bankruptcy, but the brewery was able to remain as an independent brand thanks to a subsequent cooperation with Weldebräu from Plankstadt , which took over the majority in Palmbräu. Sales were outsourced to a new company in summer 2008, Palmbräu Eppingen GmbH owned by Weldebräu. Production and logistics remained with Zorn Söhne GmbH & Co. KG . After economic difficulties, which in September 2008 led to the surprising dismissal of the managing directors Georg and Andreas Polster in addition to a reduction in staff, Palmbräu has been a preliminary insolvency administrator since November 2008.

At the beginning of April 2009, the Pforzheim brewery took over the property, real estate, inventory, empties and supplies of the insolvent brewery as well as the rights to the Palmbräu brand from Wolfgang Scheidtweiler and continued the brewing operations in Eppingen. The agreed purchase price for the assets and trademark rights was around 1.5 million euros.

Palmbräu promotes regional sport. The Palmbräu Cup , a series of show jumping tournaments held for the eleventh time in 2006 , has existed since the mid-1990s . A football tournament of the same name took place for the seventh time in 2012.

Others

The brewery is a member of the Brauring , a cooperation between private breweries from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
