José Milla y Vidaurre

José Milla y Vidaurre (born August 4, 1822 in Guatemala City , † September 30, 1882 ibid) was a Guatemalan writer .

Life

José Milla was a son of Lieutenant General and politician José Justo Milla . He first attended the Colegio Seminario in Guatemala and then studied law at the Universidad San Carlos de Guatemala . However, he did not graduate, but turned to literature. Although he had been a supporter of liberal ideas during his studies , he later placed himself in the service of the conservative government of Rafael Carrera . During this time Milla was editor of the newspaper "La Gazeta Oficial" and editor of the magazine "La Semana" , in which several of his early works were first published.

When the Carrera government was overthrown by the Liberals under the leadership of Miguel García Granados in 1871 , Milla left the country for three years and traveled to several countries in Europe and the USA . In Paris he was among other things editor of the newspaper "Le Courrier d'Outremer" . During this time his novel "Un Viaje al Otro Mundo, pasando por Otras Partes" was written .

Milla mainly wrote historical novels, which he published under the pseudonym Salomé Jil. He is considered to be the father of the Guatemalan novel.

José Milla was a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española , honorary member of the International Literary Society in Paris, a corresponding member of the Academia de Bellas Artes in Santiago de Chile and a member of the Ateneo de León .
