The Wendlinghausen lock with associated property is an estate in the style of the Weser Renaissance and is located in the same district of the municipality Dörentrup , Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

In the 15th century, Anton zur Lippe, a son of Bernhard VII , ruler of Lippe , founded a knight's seat on the farm of a Meier who had been driven out by him. After Anton, the seat changed hands twice (that of Rebock, von Post ). In 1566 the mercenary leader Hilmar von Münchhausen , a scion of the black line of the Lower Saxon noble family Münchhausen , acquired the Wendlinghausen estate from the Posts after he had already acquired numerous other goods. With foresight, he had acquired the feudal entitlement to this property including valuable income in Lemgo and Hovedissen in good time , as the noble family of the Rebock family, who had previously lived here, only had two eyes.

A son from his marriage to Lucia von Reden, Hilmar the Younger von Münchhausen (1558–1617), Lord of Schwöbber and Rinteln , had the building rebuilt from 1613 to 1616 as a moated castle . The mansion rests on a foundation of oak piles in a moat .

Hilmar the younger great-grandson, Ernst Friedemann von Münchhausen (1686–1772), sold the property to the relative Klaus Dietrich von Reden in 1730 and acquired the Herrengosserstedt estate in the Duchy of Saxony-Weißenfels, where he had been the chief court marshal of the widowed Duchess Charlotte of Saxony since 1716 -Weimar and lived as a councilor. His cousin, the famous lying baron Hieronymus von Münchhausen (1720–1797), was later a frequent guest at Wendlinghausen - he was the son of Sybille Wilhelmine von Reden, daughter of Jobst Johann von Reden from Hastenbeck and Marie Dorothea von Münchhausen from the Voldagsen family , Bolzum and Middoge.

Wendlinghausen Castle is still owned by the descendants of the builder, now the von Reden family. After extensive restoration work in 2001 and 2003, the castle is now used privately for cultural events and weddings.

Castle Park

The English-style park of Wendlinghausen Castle covers an area of over three hectares. Due to its diverse and rare flora , the facility is listed by the European Garden Heritage Network as one of the most important garden landscapes in East Westphalia . Contemporary works of art have been integrated into the landscape garden. In 2004 one of the ten by ten by ten meter tall bronze spiders Maman by the French artist Louise Bourgeois was temporarily exhibited here.
