history

Horn Castle around 1663

The exact construction date of the castle is not known. The city of Horn was planned around the year 1248. The new city was fortified in the following years and received a city wall. Presumably at this time the first parts of the castle were built during the construction of the city wall into which the castle was integrated. The castle was first mentioned in 1326 as a stone house in connection with a Marienkapelle. The castle was completed in 1348.

The castle was built as a defensive and residential complex by the nobleman Bernhard V zur Lippe and served the family, who later called themselves Count zur Lippe , as a residence , official house , widow's seat , granary and official prison .

The castle and its owners were involved in armed conflicts several times, for example in the years 1444–1449 during the Soest feud . In 1605, the dean of the Liège monastery and consorts conquered the fortress during the absence of the lord of the castle, Rene de Cerclair. Heinrich von Reuschenberg zu Overbach was appointed as administrator . Contrary to customary practice, he had the lord of the castle, who had meanwhile come to negotiate, imprisoned for several months. It is not known whether both the city and the castle were affected during the Thirty Years' War . In any case, in the years 1656-1659 a reconstruction was carried out by Count Hermann Adolf zur Lippe, in which baroque style elements were also added. The baroque staircase with the portal and a tail hood is particularly striking. The year 1659 can be read above the portal, and the family coats of arms of the builders can also be seen.

In the 18th century the now insignificant castle fell into disrepair, so that parts of the tower and the third floor of the residential building had to be removed. It was not until 1983 to 1989 that the facility was comprehensively restored in three construction phases and partially rebuilt. The keep got its third floor again and was roofed over.

today

The castle, which is located near the city center of Horn, essentially consists of the residential building and the attached keep. The castle barn from 1744 is right next door.

In the castle there are rooms for various events as well as the castle museum supported by the local history association on the upper floor, which illustrates the history of the castle and the city. The police station is located in an administration building attached to the castle.

Parts of the non-managed castle can be viewed as part of a museum visit.
