Schildberg Castle

The Castle Mountain sign or sign Burg is an Outbound Spur castle at 250-255 meters above sea level height on the plate hill west of the city Lügde in Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Only a few remains of the castle, which are protected as ground monuments , have survived.

description

Schildberg Castle consisted of an inner courtyard measuring approximately 0.15 hectares, which was surrounded by a 4-6 m deep and 6-10 m wide moat . Access was probably via a wooden bridge, which was additionally secured by a gatehouse and a rampart in front of it.

Large areas of the castle area are today destroyed by quarries. Some trench profiles and small parts of the inner surface have been preserved.

The Lippe State Museum carried out archaeological investigations on the Schildberg in 2017. According to initial findings, the development of the castle consisted of half-timbered buildings that burned down at an as yet undetermined point in time. Parts of the burned wooden structure and several shards of cooking vessels were found in a cellar that was examined. There was also a lime kiln and shards from the 10th century. The few finds made so far only allow a rough dating to the High Middle Ages, around the middle of the 11th to the middle of the 13th century.
