Selby is a district in North Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the town of the same name, Selby . Other significant places are Escrick , Hemingbrough , Riccall , Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster . There are city partnerships with Carentan in France and Filderstadt in Germany.

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Selby Urban District and parts of the Rural Districts Derwent, Hemsworth, Osgoldcross and Tadcaster.

On April 1, 1996, the following villages were separated and added to the newly formed Unitary Authority of the City of York : Acaster Malbis, Askham Bryan, Askham Richard, Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, Deighton, Dunnington, Elvington, Fulford, Heslington, Kexby, Naburn and Wheldrake. By doing this, Selby is geographically isolated from the rest of North Yorkshire.
