Harrogate [ ˈhærəgət ] is an administrative district with borough status in the county of North Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Harrogate . Other significant places are Boroughbridge , Knaresborough , Pateley Bridge , Ripon and Wath-upon-Dearne .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and arose from the merger of different local authorities of two administrative counties: In the North Riding of Yorkshire these were the Urban Districts Masham and Wath and part of the Rural District Thirsk; in the West Riding of Yorkshire these were the Borough of Harrogate, the City of Ripon, the Urban District Knaresborough, the Rural Districts Nidderdale and Ripon and Pateley Bridge and parts of the Rural Districts Wetherby and Wharfedale.
On April 1, 1996 , the following villages were separated and added to the newly formed Unitary Authority of the City of York : Nether Poppleton, Upper Poppleton, Hessay and Rufforth.
