Ryedale is a district in North Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the city of Malton . Other significant places are Norton-on-Derwent and Pickering .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was the result of the merger of various local authorities. From the East Riding of Yorkshire these were the Urban District Norton and the Rural District Norton, from the North Riding of Yorkshire the Urban Districts Malton and Pickering and the Rural Districts Flaxton, Helmsley , Kirkbymoorside , Malton and Pickering . In 1996, the district lost nearly half of its population when numerous villages in the southwest were added to the city of York's new Unitary Authority .
