Jiji ( Chinese  集 集鎮 , Pinyin Jíjí Zhèn ), also Chi-chi , is a township ( , Zhèn ) in the district of Nantou in central Taiwan .

Location and climate

Jiji has a subtropical climate. The municipality is bordered by mountains and the height above sea level varies between 230 m and 1392 m. The annual average temperature is 20.7 ° C and the average humidity is 84.4%. The rainy season lasts from April to August, while the other months are significantly drier. Typhoons are more common in summer and autumn . The neighboring communities are Zhongliao (in the north), Shuili (in the east), Lugu in the south, and Zhushan and Mingjian in the west.

Administrative division

Jiji is divided into 11 districts ( , Li ). These are: Jiji ( 集集 里 ), Heping ( 和平 里 ), Linwei ( 林 尾 里 ), Yuying ( 玉 映 里 ), Wucuo ( 吳 厝 里 ), Ailiao ( 隘寮 里 ), Tianliao ( 田寮 里 ) , Bazhang ( 八 張 里 ), Yongchang ( 永昌 里 ), Guangming ( 廣 明 里 ), Fushan ( 富山 里 ).

According to official statistics, 111 people belonged to the indigenous peoples of Taiwan at the end of 2017 , corresponding to a share of around 1.1%. This was below the overall Taiwanese average.

1999 Jiji earthquake

Jiji Township was the epicenter of what would later become known as the Jiji earthquake , which struck on September 21, 1999 and was the most devastating earthquake in Taiwan for more than 60 years. There were more than 2,400 deaths across Taiwan. In Jiji, 37 people died out of a population of 12,250 at the time. Large parts of the settlement were destroyed or badly damaged by the quake and had to be rebuilt.
