Tourism and sightseeing

Papermaking in Puli

Puli has been a papermaking center since the Japanese colonial era . The main reason for this was the abundance of clean water here. The paper industry has declined sharply since around 1990. Last but not least, environmental concerns were also decisive. Instead of the paper factories, show paper factories have appeared, in which tourists are shown the technology of paper production. Another handicraft that can be experienced in tourism in Puli is the production of Chinese lacquer . The lacquer tree was introduced to Taiwan from Vietnam in 1911 during the Japanese rule . Paint production in Puli had its heyday in the 1970s, when 90 percent of the natural paint produced in Taiwan came from Puli. After the destruction of Typhoon Wayne in 1986, many farmers switched to the more profitable betel nut cultivation. Synthetic paints replaced the natural paint. The technique of lacquer production can be seen today in the lacquer museum in Puli.

About 17 km south of Puli is the Sun Moon Lake .

Jiji earthquake

Puli was severely damaged by the 1999 Jiji earthquake , the epicenter of which was just a few kilometers from the city. In the city with then 88,271 inhabitants, 181 deaths were counted, which was the highest number of all municipalities in the district of Nantou. The city has since been rebuilt.
