The national road 6 ( Chinese  國 道 六號 , Pinyin Guódào liù hào , English National freeeway 5 or Shuishalian highway ( Chinese  水 沙 連 高速公路 , Pinyin Shuǐ shā lián gāosù gōnglù )) is a highway in Taiwan . The highway is 38 kilometers long and runs in an east-west direction from Taichung to Puli .

Street description

South of Taichung, National Road 6 begins at the sixth interchange of the highway N3that runs from Taipei to Kaohsiung. The highway has 2 × 2 lanes, runs along the Dadu River to the east and then through mountainous areas with peaks over 1000 m. The exit to Guoxing , which was built on a high viaduct over the Dadu River, is impressive . It then reaches a basin around Puli and passes through a series of tunnels along the Dadu. It then forms a northern bypass from Puli, where it ends. Its continuation is the provincial road P14, which leads further into the mountains.

history

The entire motorway was opened to traffic on September 1, 2009. There are three tunnels, the longest of which is 2,455 meters long. The viaduct that was built for the Guoxing exit is 68 meters high.

future

There are plans to extend National Road 6 to Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan. For this, however, the mountain range of the Taiwanese Central Mountains would have to be crossed and a tunnel 15 kilometers in length would have to be built. On the other hand, the area is at risk of earthquakes. Because of the high costs, the plan has not yet been implemented. The missing part to Hualian would be about 65 kilometers long.
