The NXT Championship is the most important wrestling title on the WWE NXT roster . Introduced on July 1, 2012, when NXT was founded , the title is only awarded to male individual wrestlers on the NXT rooster. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
history
The NXT Championship was announced on August 2, 2012 at the NXT wrestling show by Dusty Rhodes , in which four wrestlers from the main roaster and four from the NXT roster compete in a knockout system for the NXT Championship . On July 26, 2012, Seth Rollins prevailed against Jinder Mahal in the finals, making him the first NXT Champion .
On November 19, 2016 at TakeOver: Toronto , Samoa Joe became the first performer likely to hold the championship more than once.
On WrestleMania weekend 2017, all NXT title belts received a new design. The new title belts were unveiled at the TakeOver: Orlando event and presented to the winners of the respective matches. The championship includes removable side panels, with the WWE logo as the standard panels, which are customized to the current title holder.
