NXT TakeOver: Toronto was a WWE wrestling event that aired on the WWE Network . It took place on November 19, 2016 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada . It was the 13th hosting of a major NXT event under the name NXT TakeOver since February 2014 and the fourth in 2016. For the first time one of these took place in Canada.

In the run-up to the event, five matches were scheduled. These resulted from the storylines shown on NXT , the WWE Development League's weekly show on the WWE Network , in the weeks leading up to NXT TakeOver: Toronto .

Matches
At the beginning of the show, Bobby Roode and Tye Dillinger faced each other in a singles match . Roode won the match after showing his finishing move Glourious DDT against Dillinger. This was followed by the final of the second edition of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament , in which The Authors of Pain ( Akam and Rezar ) were allowed to defeat Team TM-61 ( Nick Miller and Shane Thorne ). The actual ring accompaniment of the Authors of Pain Paul Ellering was locked in a cage hanging over the ring as part of a storyline during the match.
Next, The Revival ( Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson ) defended their NXT Tag Team Championship against challengers #DIY ( Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa ) in a two-out-of-three-falls match . Initially, the title holders were able to take the lead here when Wilder Gargano pinned after a little more than five minutes of match time . The Revival had previously shown the Shatter Machine against him . After 13 minutes, Ciampa could for by pinfall against Dawson before Gargano Wilder after more than 22 minutes task forced bringing #DIY secured the title. In addition, Asuka successfully defended her NXT Women's Championship against Mickie James , who was returning to WWE , after she had to give up at the Asuka Lock . A handshake offered by James after the match was not accepted by Asuka.
Main Event
The main event of the event was a match for the NXT Championship between title holder Shinsuke Nakamura and his challenger Samoa Joe . Both had already met on NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II in August 2016 when Nakamura Joe was allowed to take the title. Nakamura was on his feed by a group of violinists accompanied that played his music.
Joe won the match after uranage on the ring steps outside and a subsequent muscle buster against Nakamura inside the ring.
