The 29th WWE Royal Rumble 2016 was a WWE wrestling event that aired as pay-per-view and on the WWE Network . It took place on January 24, 2016 at the Amway Center in Orlando , Florida , United States as the WWE's first major event in 2016. It was the 29th edition of the Royal Rumble since 1988. The event took place for the first time at the Amway Center, for the second time since 1990 in Orlando and for the fifth time since 1990, 1991, 1995 and 2006 in Florida.

In the run-up to the event, six matches were scheduled, one of which was for the pre-show . These resulted from the storylines shown on Raw and SmackDown , the weekly shows of the WWE, in the weeks leading up to the Royal Rumble . The main fight was a traditional royal rumble match, a 30-man battle royal , in which the highest title in the league, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship , was fought for the second time since 1992 .

Notes on the event
- The following title changes occurred during the event:
- Kalisto defeated Alberto Del Rio in a singles match and received the WWE United States Championship ;
- Triple H won the Royal Rumble Match and thereby received the WWE World Heavyweight Championship .
- Jack Swagger and Mark Henry won the pre-show match and thus each received a place in the Royal Rumble match.
- After the match for the WWE Divas Championship , Sasha Banks returned after a long break and attacked the participants in the match Charlotte and Becky Lynch .
- Well-known wrestler AJ Styles made his WWE debut during the Royal Rumble match . Triple H returned to the ring for a match for the first time since WrestleMania 31 on March 29, 2015.
- Roman Reigns had to leave the hall for some time during the Royal Rumble match after he was attacked by the Stable League of Nations ( Alberto Del Rio , King Barrett , Rusev and Sheamus ). However, he returned towards the end of the match.
- Braun Strowman , Erick Rowan and Luke Harper from the stable The Wyatt Family returned to the ring after their elimination by Brock Lesnar to eliminate him as well.
- The Miz waited at the commentary desk for some time after moving in.
