Joseph Ruud (born November 28, 1981 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA ), better known by his ring name Erick Rowan , is an American wrestler of Norwegian origin. He was under contract with the WWE until April 15, 2020 and is a former SmackDown Tag Team Champion .

Private life

Ruud's family immigrated to the United States from Nannestad , Norway . In 2010 he took part in the Norwegian reality TV show Alt for Norge , where he took third place.

Wrestling career

Independent area (2003-2011)

Ruud began his wrestling career in 2003 and played matches for various promotions in the USA until 2007 . In 2007 he went to Japan for some time to Pro Wrestling Noah , where he played 18 matches as Thoruf. In 2008 he returned to the United States, where he performed under the ring name Thoruf Marius in the F1rst Wrestling Promotion in Minnesota . There he had a feud with Brody Hoofer.

World Wrestling Entertainment (2011-2020)

Florida Championship Wrestling (2011-2012)

In February 2011 Ruud signed a development contract with the wrestling market leader WWE , where he appeared under the ring name Erick Rowan in the Florida Championship Wrestling Development League (FCW). He made his television debut in August 2011, defeating Kenneth Cameron. Rowan and James Bronson then lost in a tag team match against Titus O'Neil and Leakee .

The Wyatt Family and The Bludgeon Brothers (2012-2018)

On December 12, 2012 Ruud made his debut at WWE NXT , where he and Luke Harper became a follower of Bray Wyatt and part of the Wyatt Family . On January 9, 2013, they defeated Percy Watson and Yoshi Tatsu . On May 2, Rowan and Harper won a Triple Threat Elimination Tag Team match. On May 8, they defeated Adrian Neville and Bo Dallas to win the NXT Tag Team Championship . On June 5, 2013, they successfully defended the title against Corey Graves and Kassius Ohno . On July 17, Rowan and Harper finally lost the NXT Tag Team Championship to Adrian Neville and Corey Graves.

As of May 27, 2013, WWE Raw recorded promotional videos of the Wyatt Family. On July 8th, the Wyatt Family made their debut on Raw, attacking Kane . On July 26th, Rowan and Harper played the first match in a main show on SmackDown , which they won against Tons of Funk (Brodus Clay and Tensai ). This was followed by a streak of several months of victories for the Wyatt Family, until they were defeated for the first time by Cody Rhodes and Goldust on October 11, 2013 at SmackDown. In early 2014, the Wyatt Family had a feud against The Shield ( Roman Reigns , Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins ). Rowan and Harper then supported their leader Bray Wyatt in a feud against John Cena .

After leaving the Wyatt Family in November 2014, he took part as "Face" in the traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match, side by side with John Cena. At the subsequent PPV "TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs", he lost a feud against Big Show in a "Stairs Match".

Since October 19, 2015, he has been part of the Wyatt Family again.

On April 3, 2016, Rowan had a singles match at WrestleMania . He fought against The Rock , but lost the match after just 6 seconds to a "rock bottom".

After being out for a few months due to an injury, he returned to SmackDown! On April 4, 2017! back and attacked together with Bray Wyatt the meanwhile and now former member of the Wyatt Family, WWE Champion Randy Orton . That same evening there was a tag team match between Rowan and Bray Wyatt on one side and Randy Orton and Luke Harper on the other. A brief feud between former partners Rowan and Harper ensued, which ended on May 21, 2017 at the PPV Backlash with Harper's victory.

Rowan and Harper returned together on SmackDown Live on October 10, 2017. They now traded under the gimmick of the Bludgeon Brothers, who carried large hammers with them to the ring. The tag team was portrayed as very dominant, which eventually led to Wrestlemania 34 winning the Smack Down Tag Team Championships by defeating The Usos and The New Day in a triple threat match . On August 21, 2018, they lost the SmackDown LIve title to The New Day. In this match, Rowan injured his upper arm and was out for a few months.

Various feuds (2019-2020)

On January 27, 2019, Rowan returned without Harper at the Royal Rumble with a new gimmick and helped Daniel Bryan in his WWE Championship title match against AJ Styles . The alliance was officially confirmed in the following SmackDown Live broadcast when Rowan appeared in the ring with Bryan and presented his new, vegan version of the WWE Championship. Both now appear as eco-activists who denounce waste and the destruction of nature as heels . On May 7, 2019 Rowan and his tag team partner Daniel Bryan won the vacant WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship by defeating The Usos . Rowan and his tag team partner Daniel Bryan played another match against The Usos on May 19, 2019 at WWE Money in the Bank , and they lost that match. On June 23, 2019, they defended the title against The Heavy Machinery at WWE Stomping Grounds. On July 17, 2019, they finally lost the title to The New Day at Extreme Rules , this reign lasted 68 days. On September 15, 2019, he played a no disqualification match against Roman Reigns , which he won. On October 6, 2019, he played a Tornado Tag Team Match with Luke Harper against Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan, which he lost. As part of the WWE Draft, Rowan moved from SmackDown to Raw on October 14, 2019 . Due to a wave of layoffs, he was released from the WWE on April 15, 2020.
