WWE Network is a video-on-demand service from WWE . It was originally announced in 2011. On January 8, 2014, WWE announced the launch of the service in the United States. The company announced on July 31 that the service is expected to launch worldwide. The WWE network consists of a linear 24-hour streaming channel and an on-demand program from the WWE libraries.
history
Emergence
The idea of the WWE Network goes back to the year 2000. Linda McMahon , the manager at the time, said the World Wrestling Federation wanted to launch its own channel. The company had the idea to take over the Sci-Fi Channel and convert it into a wrestling channel. However, the USA Network executives rejected the idea. As a result, former USA Network President Barry Baker encouraged WWF to talk to other broadcasters about a possible deal. WWF relocated its programming at Viacom and the USA Network filed a breach of contract lawsuit against WWF. The Delaware Chancery Court ruled in June 2000 in favor of the WWF.
expansion
In January 2014, the video-on-demand service called WWE Network started in the United States and was gradually made available in other countries. The video platform contains all PPVs of WWE, WWF, ECW and WCW as well as almost all episodes of RAW and SmackDown and various in-house productions and broadcasts all PPVs of the promotion live.
The WWE Network started in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on January 5, 2016, because the current contract with ProSiebenSat.1 was first fulfilled, which guaranteed the Unterföhring media group that the PPVs would be broadcast exclusively via Maxdome. The last PPV broadcast on Maxdome was WWE Tables, Ladders and Chairs in December 2015, after which Maxdome withdrew from the WWE PPV business.
New design
In January 2019, WWE signed a contract with Endeavor to replace BAMTech as an operational partner. Since then, WWE has also been working with Deltatre to revise the apps on various devices.
The new WWE Network platform launched in August 2019, ahead of the SummerSlam PPV event. The streaming service offers a new user experience, support for 1080p streams and new browser tools. There are plans to add a download function in the future. Support for certain older devices, such as older Smart TVs , the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 , has been discontinued with the update. In an interview with The Verge , WWE Co-President George Barrios announced that there are currently plans to bring the existing video content from WWE.com to the streaming service as a free tier.

archive
The archive includes almost all previous and current WWE productions, as well as several productions from other promotions. For years the WWE has acquired archives from other wrestling promotions. The first major acquisition came in 2001 when they purchased the full historical archive of their former competitor World Championship Wrestling . By purchasing the Extreme Championship Wrestling archive, the company obtained the majority of all national wrestling content available at the time. By virtue of WWE's previous membership of the NWA , ownership of WCW, and ownership of Extreme Championship Wrestling and other smaller regional promotions, WWE owns the majority of the NWA footage, which includes most of the major NWA matches from the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.
The major monthly WWE events are broadcast live on the WWE Network. Almost every pay-per-view event from the WWE, JCP / WCW and ECW is available on the WWE Network. However, some PPV events have not yet been made available. This mainly includes events like the WCW Events Millennium Final , Collision in Korea and Japan Supershows , as well as the ECW / FMW Supershows.
In addition, the pay-per-view area contains several events that were not broadcast on pay-per-view. Such as B. the Royal Rumble 1988 and also several ECW Supercards are listed in the pay-per-view area, although they were never broadcast on PPV.
