Melina Nava Perez (born March 9, 1979 in Los Angeles , California ), better known by her ring name Melina , is an American wrestler . Her biggest success so far was winning the Women's Championship three times and winning the Divas Championship twice .
Wrestling career
Beginnings
Before Melina turned to wrestling, she worked as a model. During this time she was elected Miss California. After Mike Henderson convinced Pérez in 2001 to get into professional wrestling, she signed up for training in Jesse Hernandez's School of Hard Knocks.
Melina's debut in the ring was in 2002. She toured the independent wrestling scene. She joined various California promotions, such as the "Empire Wrestling Federation" and the now closed "CRUSH All-Womens" promotion, where she worked with Mickie James . While she competed as Kyra for various Southern California independent promoters, she received a contract with the Ohio Valley Wrestling Development League in December 2003 , which was then part of WWE .
World Wrestling Entertainment (2004-2011)
Ohio Valley Wrestling (2004)
Perez made her debut at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW for short) in March 2004. Matt Cappotelli was accompanied by Perez to a match against Johnny Nitro , changed sides and then formed the tag team (MNM) with Nitro and Joey Mercury . Here Perez acted as a manager . On November 10, 2004, MNM won the OVW Southern Tag Team title.
MNM and Women's Champion (2005-2009)

In 2005, she made her debut on SmackDown , one of the WWE's two main shows, and continued to work as a team with Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro under the name MNM (Mercury / Nitro / Melina). MNM have won the WWE Tag Team Championship several times. Most recently they lost it in 2006 to Paul London and Brian Kendrick . After that, the team was separated, Mercury stayed with Smackdown while Perez and Nitro switched to the other WWE show RAW .
On February 19, 2007, Perez became WWE Women's Champion for the first time after winning a match against Mickie James .
During the WrestleMania European tour in Paris on April 24, 2007 she lost the title unplanned: In a title match between Perez and Victoria and Mickie James, Victoria forgot to kick out a cover attempt by Mickie James, so the title had to change. In an immediately scheduled rematch, however, Perez won her title back. Although not planned, both title changes are officially recognized by the WWE. On June 24, 2007, she finally lost the title at the WWE Vengeance event to Candice Michelle . In the following period, Perez appeared regularly, even at pay-per-view events, in title fights without being allowed to win the title before she was injured in July 2008 and had to take a break until November.
After her return, she was involved in a feud program with the then title holder Beth Phoenix . On January 25, 2009, Perez defeated Beth Phoenix at the Royal Rumble and won the WWE Women's Championship for the third time. On April 13, 2009 she moved along with her title in the course of the WWE Draft to SmackDown . On June 28, 2009 at the major event The Bash , she had to hand over her title to Michelle McCool .
Divas Champion and Dismissal (2009-2011)
Perez switched back to RAW on October 12, 2009 as part of a diva trade . On the same day, she played a title match against Jillian Hall , who had won a fight for the WWE Divas Championship against Mickie James just minutes earlier . With her victory, Perez became the new title holder; as the third WWE Diva, she was able to win both the Women's Championship and the Divas Championship .
She injured her knee at a house show and fell out. Since she could no longer defend her Divas Championship due to the injury, the title was declared vacant. In the August 2nd 2010 edition of RAW, she made her in ring comeback when she attacked reigning Divas Champion Alicia Fox . On August 15, Perez managed to win the title after beating Alicia Fox. At Night of Champions on September 19, 2010 she had to lose the title again in a Title Unification Lumberjill Match against Michelle McCool and McCool became the first Unified WWE Divas Champion . On August 5, 2011, Perez was released.
